Nuclear fission and renewable sources such as solar and wind help reduce our consumption of fossil fuels, but the demand continues to grow. As our population grows, so does the need for practical, sustainable solutions.

Of the many solutions to this energy crisis being developed, fusion stands high above the other alternatives in terms of potential to be a truly clean and sustainable source of energy. Fusion technology, however, has significant challenges. Though we have seen progress in magnetic confinement and inertial confinement approaches to fusion research, practical fusion energy is still expected to be years away.
